My murals ...

My first mural I ever painted was probably at the age of 6 when I use to wake up in the middle of the night and decorate the hallway with crayon and anything that could make a mark! I also have a memory of painting a large map of South Africa at the age of 8 when I was convinced that I was going to be a weater woman when I grew up!

When I left school I opened an art gallery called Redz and painted it blue (pic no 3). I then painted a large, bright mural along the carpark wall (pics 1 & 2). From this I ran a signwriting business and managed the art gallery for a couple of years. The gallery housed local art, established South African artists as well as local african crafts. Often many of the african crafts people would perform, paint/sculpt outside the gallery. I painted a couple of murals mostly in restaurants (pics 4 & 5) and then done a stint with a large department store working in the creative department producing props and displays (pics 6 & 7).

Moving to Scotland has given me many opportunities to paint murals. I painted the murals in a home in Inveresk, Musselburgh which was sold for over £1.3 million. The theme was Egyption and they were situated in the indoor swimming pool room. All walls were covered with Egyptian motifs and pictures (pics 8,9, 10 & 11).

My first taste of working with the Prestoungrange Arts Festival, was helping Kate Hunter, a muralist and stage designer from Edinburgh, complete the John Muir/Gothenburg mural which is situated opposite the Goth, Prestonpans and on the wall of my mothers house. This mural depicts the trade route links between Scotland and Sweden; a portrait of John Muir (the John Muir Walkway runs directly beneath this mural along the coast); Fowlers Ale (the brewery was situated in Prestonpans0 and the publisher who put up the money to build the Goth in 1908. (pic 12)

My first whole mural that I painted in Prestonpans was the Redburn Dairy (pic 13). This is situated on the corner of the High Street and Redburn Road. It shows Tom McKinlay who owned and run the dairy with his horse and cart and a large close up portrait of the man. I managed to trace is son and daughter, who now live in the States. They came back to Prestonpans to officially open the mural.

Continuing with the dairy theme, I then proceeded to paint a large cow just around the corner (pic 14)

I have also been lucky enough to participate in 2 "Mural in a Day" murals. Firstly, was the "Mining Mural" in Bishop, California with lead muralist Art Mortimer (pics 15 & 16) as well as the "Hey Johnnie Cope" Mural in Prestonpans, East Lothian (pic 17) with lead muralist and close friend, Andrew Crummy (pic 18)
